In yesterday’s Meeting of the Titans, our Member in focus requested the input of myself and the Brains Trust to support his navigation of some current situations, including the personal challenge of dealing with a non-performing and key member of his Team who had previously been an integral part of everything, and his plans to expand interstate.
As always, the Brains Trust delivered pertinent questions, a lot of well earnt wisdom and valuable contacts, providing much food for thought, new perspectives and new lines of action.
As successful business leaders, it is a given that we are independent and able to make unilateral decisions and lead our Teams to get things done. This can make it even more important, however, to have like-minded comrades to support us in achieving the epitome of what we truly want, so that we don’t have an experience of being isolated or walking the journey alone.
Today was this Member’s first HotSeat experience and he summed it all up perfectly at the end, when he said:
“Being a business owner, it can be a very very lonely experience. You can’t always share how you’re feeling, what your desires are, your challenges etc.
You’re generally judged by your employees in a different light as well, so this (the Club) is really great to be able to share unfiltered.”
I am blown away by the benefits of these sessions and shared today how extremely lucky we are to have the space that we do within the Club.
Over the 10 years we’ve been doing this, a common comment I’ve heard from Members is “I know lots of successful people; however, I never have the conversations with them that we have within the Club”.
What makes the difference?
1. Like-minded business leaders who get each other’s world
2. Scheduled regular catch ups (not the very occasional beer, coffee or dinner)
3. Facilitated conversations. As the facilitator I know things about all Members which, in normal unfacilitated conversation, they may not pick up about each other, and thus don’t get to benefit from. It also means that I can recommend they speak with a Member who can assist when they don’t know how, if or why
To openly share and discuss the successes and challenges we are navigating, within a group of comrades who get our world and where there is genuine interest in supporting each other to win, is definitely a winning formula.
Lonely at the top
