Guilty as charged

by Leigh / Friday, 06 May 2022 / Published in Physical/Health

In yesterday’s Meeting of the Titans, the Member in focus shared a challenge he was experiencing.

He had been wanting to make time for exercise and going to the gym but felt guilty stepping away from work while things were so busy. His high integrity and the value he places in his Team had him wanting to make sure he was working alongside them and leading by example.

Can you relate?

A good question to ask is what example are you actually setting, when you’re not putting your own health and happiness first?

It seems logical that the best example we can be is of someone who invests time and energy in what makes them happy. However, strong feelings of guilt can make it more challenging to make those moves and put ourselves first.

Instead we can opt for getting ‘in the trenches’ to try and ease the burden, potentially disempowering the Team and losing focus on fulfilling our actual role and responsibilities.

A simple and effective process that you can use to move beyond feelings of guilt or uncertainty around taking a particular action EG taking time out to go to the gym or making a change in life or business if you are experiencing something similar, is as follows:

  • First write down a list of all the reasons this (going to the gym, taking time out) will benefit you. Take your time and pause here for a minute when you think you’re done, as there may be more reasons available
  • Secondly write a list of all the reasons that taking this action will benefit your business.
  • Lastly, write a list of reasons that taking this action will benefit your family and loved ones and keep going until you are done

This will help you to refocus on the bigger picture and you will have many more reasons to take that action than to not take it. It’s a simple exercise which has profound results, actually rewiring your brain. Because of its simplicity it can be easily overlooked.

I encourage you to grab a pen and paper, or a notetaking device right now and get it done. Either that or schedule a time which you promise to commit to, to get it completed. Once done, it’s a good idea to leave it somewhere you see it regularly and can consider it, and add even add to it.

You will also be able to see how, by not taking the action, yourself and those around you might miss out on those benefits 🙂

Food for thought.
