In yesterday’s Meeting of the Titans, we covered a lot of ground with the Member in focus, including the importance of him designing his ultimate role within the business, in order to increase his personal fulfilment and enjoyment.
He shared that his current experience is that he gets up, puts his boots on and starts firefighting, when he knows he’d really like to be orchestrating his day the way he wants it to be instead.
This is not an uncommon experience amongst business leaders, and was echoed by a business owner and prospective Member I had a Discovery Call with a few days ago.
Both of these men are impressive and smart. It can seem that strengthening the management team or improving workflows will change this experience. This equates to moving chess pieces around in the hope of winning the game, when it’s the game that actually needs changing.
Our patterned ways of operating and ingrained behaviours need closer inspection in order make these kinds of changes, because if we’re used to operating under intense pressure or overwhelm, the absence of it will likely feel like something’s wrong or missing. It might even kick in fear or guilt that we aren’t pulling our weight; not doing enough or being enough and sending us searching for the nearest problem that needs solving to feel back in familiar territory.
Amazingly, we can become physically and emotionally addicted to the particular cocktail of hormones that we experience from doing things the way we do, so there’s some inner awareness and work needed to break the cycle, in order to do something different.
Support from those that have already achieved a more fulfilling and enjoyable experience of life and business is priceless, as are the tools and resources to clear some space for yourself so you can take the reigns on how you want things to go.
As always, the inner work comes first, as without acknowledging and understanding how we are contributing to the experience we are currently having, it can be almost impossible to make any lasting change towards more freedom and choice.
The willingness to see things from a new perspective is the precursor to enjoying our experience exactly the way that we would like it. From there everything is possible.
