When your expectations aren’t met, or things take an unexpected turn in life and business, how quickly can you adapt?
Do you feel confident that a unique and magical opportunity for something amazing to happen has just been created, or does it take a while to digest the changes and bounce back?
In the current climate, with external decision-makers having a day-to-day influence on our lives and businesses, it’s more important now than ever, that we have the flexibility and tenacity to roll with the changes and work ‘off-plan’.
In our Member meeting yesterday, the non-attendance of our Guest speaker created an opportunity for spontaneity and the result was a unique collaboration and a very valuable session.
On being faced with the gaping hole that signified the lack of our Guest Speaker and no other material prepared, it only took a few moments for inspiration to strike and we changed course, heading into an unplanned and fantastically collaborative session with the Brains Trust.
In my experience, a sudden and unexpected occurrence provides a space from which magic invariably happens 🙂
And luckily for me, I was with a crew of amazing comrades who were happy to flow with the change of direction and actively create something from nothing.
In a Forbes published article from 2019, Wayne Elsey stated that:
“Way back in 2011, Harvard Business Review published an article (paywall) about how adaptability was the “new competitive advantage.” Flash forward eight years, and resilience is beyond a trend.”
Being resilient can become tiring when you’re wearing the weight of everything as the business leader. My suggestion to navigate these interesting and sometimes trying times, is to get fellow leaders around you.
Make a point to regularly connect (scheduled time) with people that ‘get’ you and are in a similar position to you. The value I observe that comes from this is very unique and quite special in the way that it assists on so many levels.
